Position Paper by ETIP Bioenergy: supporting the 5% of innovative renewables target in RED revision

According to amendment to Renewable Energy Directive (RED) introduced by the European Parliament, each Member State shall set an indicative target of 5% as innovative renewable energy technology of new installed capacity. This has a great potential to boost the EU bioenergy and biofuels industry, notably by supporting local industry in the bioenergy and biofuels sector and to assist those bioenergy technologies which are becoming mature but have not scaled up yet on the market.

This targeted aid to innovation would impel Member States to enact measures to support innovative technologies in order to meet the target.

ETIP Bioenergy is ready and willing to work with Member States to determine which bioenergy technologies meet the requirements of the 5% target or to give feedback on a preselected list of technologies. This task will be pursued in the SET Plan revamping process: acting as a framework for cooperation among energy sectors and actors, it is an ideal venue to determine priorities in innovative clean energy technologies.
