ASTM Biofuels Standards
Over 12,000 ASTM standards operate globally, including many internationally recognised standards for biofuels. To find specific biofuels standards visit the ASTM website and search by keyword (e.g. biodiesel, bioethanol, etc).
The development of ASTM standards has helped the commercialisation of various types of biojet fuel. See ASTM Aviation Fuel Subcommittee
Renewable Synthesized Iso-Paraffinic (SIP) fuel (renewable farnesane hydrocarbon) is now included in ASTM D7566.
New standards are being introduced for advanced biofuels, such as butanol, for example:
ASTM D7875, covers 'Standard Test Method for Determination of Butanol and Acetone Content of Butanol for Blending with Gasoline by Gas Chromatography'. The standard is primarily designed to ensure the purity of isobutanol manufactured for use as a fuel.
ASTM D7862 covers blends of butanol with gasoline at 1 - 12.5 % vol in automotive spark ignition engines. The specification covers three butanol isomers: 1-butanol, 2-butanol, and 2-methyl-1-propanol. The specification specifically excludes 2-methyl-2-propanol (that is, tert-butyl alcohol).
