ETIP Bioenergy workshop at EUBCE 2026: Scaling innovation and deployment of  renewable fuels

On 20 May 2026, ETIP Bioenergy organised the workshop “Scaling innovation and achieving deployment for renewable fuels” in the framework of European Biomass Conference and Exhibition 2026. The session brought together representatives from the European Commission, Member States, industry, research and the wider bioenergy community to exchange views on the deployment of renewable fuels and advanced bioenergy technologies in Europe.

The workshop focused on the contribution of renewable fuels and bioenergy to the EU’s climate neutrality objectives, industrial competitiveness and energy resilience, while addressing current policy developments and priorities for research, innovation and deployment.

An update on the implementation of SET Plan Action 8 on Renewable Fuels and Bioenergy was presented by RSE, providing an overview of ongoing activities and progress in strengthening cooperation among Member States and stakeholders across the sector.

Maria Georgiadou, European Commission, DG Research and Innovation, shared recent policy developments related to advanced biofuels. Her presentation highlighted the strategic role of advanced biofuels in achieving the EU’s climate and energy objectives, particularly in hard-to-abate sectors, and underlined the need to scale up industrial production capacity, strengthen value chains and create stable framework conditions to support investment and deployment.

Agata Prządka, CINEA, presented key challenges and lessons learned from Innovation Fund projects deploying net-zero and innovative technologies. The presentation highlighted the importance of targeted financial support in addressing barriers related to scale-up, financing and implementation, and in enabling the transition from innovation to commercial deployment.

The workshop concluded with an interactive stakeholder exchange led by Dina Bacovsky, BEST and Luca Bondi, CINEA. Through an interactive questionnaire, participants were invited to share their views on research and innovation priorities, deployment challenges and opportunities for renewable fuels and bioenergy in Europe. The feedback collected will contribute to the ongoing development of the upcoming Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda for SET Plan Action 8 Renewable Fuels and Bioenergy.

The discussions confirmed the importance of continued cooperation between policymakers, industry and research actors to accelerate the deployment of sustainable renewable fuels and bioenergy technologies in support of Europe’s energy transition.
