This review addresses Non-Food research activities that have been supported within what is now the European Union, but extends back to activities prior to the Treaty on European Union and the Single European Act in order to cover the history of funding in this area through a succession of RTD Framework Programmes (FPs). The purpose of the review is to provide an overview of the topics covered since the concept of Non-Food research was first introduced through funding of ECLAIR. It covers activities specifically focused on Non-food (AIR, FAIR, QoL KA 5.2) as well as parallel actions supporting relevant research in biomass energy, forestry and wood technology, biotechnology and materials science.
