The SINTEF Group is the largest independent research organisation in Scandinavia. Every year, SINTEF supports the development of approximately 2000 Norwegian and overseas companies via research and development activities. Within the SINTEF Group there are several departments dealing with biofuel activities, including applied and fundamental research tasks for both thermochemical and biochemical biofuel production routes. The research at SINTEF includes the whole process chain for both conversion options and biorefineries. SINTEF is cooperating with both Norwegian and European industry as well as NGO's. The research focus of SINTEF Energy Research lies in the process development of key gasification technologies including reactors design, system studies and modelling in the field of thermochemical biomass conversion. Application and pretreatment of challenging biomass for gasification is one of the main focus areas. SINTEF Hydrocarbon Process Chemistry (Kincat Gemini center) focuses on catalyst development for the catalytic processes within thermochemical conversion. The department of Biotechnology at SINTEF Materials and Chemistry focuses on key research areas for 2nd generation bioalcohol production including fermentation, optimization and strain development. SINTEF conducts research within separation of bioalcohols from the fermentation broth and process integration for efficient energy use as well. SINTEF Fisheries and Aquaculture has algae related research, focusing on macroalgae production. SINTEF Technology and Society is focusing on research within non-technological issues. SINTEF is also part of BRISK - European Research Infrastructure for Thermochemical Biomass Conversion.
