Enel is a major producer of electricity from renewable sources including biomass and bio-fuels. It expects to use biomass in co-combustion at all coal fired power stations where this is possible. It is participating in a project for the construction of a biodiesel plant and the utilization of some of the biomass residues for co-firing in a power stations. It will use bio-oil and biodiesel in its diesel generating systems located in Italy's small islands, starting from the Aeolian islands and the Tuscan archipelago. Research at Enel is collaborating with Sant Anna School and University of Pisa, setting up an energy farm for the purpose of testing innovative high energy content crops and developing processes and technologies for the production of low-cost alternative biofuels.
